Exploring The Right Assisted Living Plan: A Checklist

Assisted Living Plan

When it’s time to help a loved one look into assisted living options, it’s important to choose the right plan. Different communities will have a variety of options needed, so it is important to compare them carefully to find one that meets the senior’s needs. Some of the things to compare include the following.

Figure Out What Care is Needed

Before looking at assisted living plans, take the time to figure out what care is needed. Every senior is different, so they may need certain help, but may be more independent with other tasks. Having a list of what they need help with can make it easier to find a plan that covers everything without including a lot of things they don’t need.

Check Out the Living Spaces

Check out the living spaces at any potential communities to see if they’re going to be a good fit. Ask about the size of the rooms, whether they’re private rooms, if in-room kitchens are available, and if the senior can control their temperature on their own. Also, ask about accessibility features and what can be brought in from home to make the space more comfortable.

Look Into Dining Options

Seniors need access to nutritious dining options, so it is a good idea to ask about what’s available within the community. Do they include meals with the cost of assisted living, and are there snacks and beverages available throughout the day? Find out if seniors are able to eat in their room or if there are social opportunities when having a meal.

Ask About Staff and Support Services

It’s a good idea to ask about the staffing ratio and what support services are included in the assisted living plan. Find out if there is staff available 24/7 in case help is needed or if the staff is trained in emergency care. Don’t forget to find out if there is an on-site doctor or transportation available if the senior wants to continue using their own doctor.

Think About the Cost

It’s crucial to think of the cost, as this can have an impact on what’s available for the senior. Assisted living can be expensive, so it may be beneficial to look into what help is available to cover the costs. While Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living, there may be private insurance or other options available to help cover the cost of assisted living. Look into what is included and what may be taken out of the plans to customize them to meet the senior’s budget, if possible.

Plan for the Future

Don’t forget to think about the future and what it may hold. Consider how the senior’s needs may change in the near future and whether the plan will continue to be a good fit for them as they age. Can it be changed later, or is it possible to add on services as needed? Ask about what happens with changing needs to help prevent the senior from having to move again.

If your loved one is ready to move into assisted living to be able to get the help they need to stay safe and healthy, make sure you help them find the right option for their needs. Use the information here to compare the different plans to find one that will work well for them.
